As is now well known, acupuncture is a 5000 year old system of general medicine, developed in China, which has become increasingly commonly used in the West since the beginning of the 20th Century. It is used to treat a variety of conditions and can apply itself to the treatment of most of the circumstances for which one would visit the GP, not to replace this, but to assist or complement such treatment. It is most commonly associated with treatments for specific complaints, addictions, arthritis, asthma, back pain, circulatory problems, depression, facial paralysis high blood pressure, infertility, menstrual problems, migraines, rheumatism, sciatica, skin conditions. However it is also used as a preventative measure. It can also be used alongside conventional medicine in the treatment of both acute and chronic disease. As with any therapy, response to acupuncture can vary from patient to patient.

Fine needles are inserted for a second or two or for up to 20 minutes, depending on the effetc required. Patients experience a sensation usually described as a tingling or a dull ache as the needles are inserted, with a heaviness of limb or a general relaxation as the treatment is in progress.

Sometimes the effects of treatment are dramatic, sometimes treatment will take several months.
